Venice Photography Tip: if you are looking for a good spot to shoot at the lagoon of Venice and one of its most beautiful islands, San Giorgio Maggiore, you can go to the “Riva degli Schiavoni”, right next to Saint Mark’s Square. The foreground is rich of distinctive elements of Venice, such as gondolas, poles and lampposts, which you can include in your frame, or just ignore to focus on the background, as I did in the picture above. In front of the church is still visible the temporary installation “The Sky Over Nine Columns“, in one of its last days in Venice.

What to shot: San Giorgio Maggiore.

Ideal time to shot: Late afternoon or early night, when the lights start to shine and the sky still has some of his brightness.

Gear: Wide angles to standars zooms.

How to get there: Public transport water bus stations S. Marco S. Zaccaria (line 1, 2, 4.1, 4.2, 5.1, 5.2).

    • Thank you so much Meg! Sometimes I have to wake up very early, sometimes I use graduated filters to lengthen the exposures, other times, as in this case, I just look for the most isolated pier and set my tripod there waiting for the best moment to shot!😉 I wish you all the best for a terrific 2015 both at Potato Point and in Poland!😉

Not hoping for a paddling trip; but the advice you offer re photography (and places, transport, etc.) throughout your blog will certainly be useful and very much appreciated!     • Hi Jean and Alex! Thank you so much for your comments, always so appreciated!😉 Actually I have been doing kayak for about 8 years here in Venice as my favourite sport! But there are really just a few chances to rent a kayak for “tourism”, even if it is getting more popular in the very last years. One of the possibility is to go to the small island “La Certosa” and rent them at venicekayak.com, or you can find a rental just next Rialto Bridge at lefavettevenezia.com
      Hope it may help you to discover a really really unusual Venice in your next trip, and not too crowdy of course😉 All the best for your 2015!

      • Oooh, thank you! We will definitely investigate these. Wondering how the water quality is there, generally? Do you favorite paddling routes and destinations? How do gondoliers and kayakers get along? We will look also for nautical charts. This is so exciting!!🙂
